Bravo, Chuck, I wholeheartedly agree.
I have a clock and I take it to tourneys.
You are right in that the tourney directors wait until after the fact to start clocking and the damage is done.
I can guarantee you if any of a certain few individuals is at a tourney it will get behind and they will be put on a clock. Happens every time and they never learn. It's almost like they're gaming the system and laughing at the rest of us.
I think the ABT has been too nice for too long with some of these guys. They should put them on a clock when they register.
I'm for clocking all matches. I've had too many circumstances of waiting hours and hours for a match. It's very frustrating, takes the fun out of the tourney, upsets me, tires me, and, doubtlessly, affects my play.
Just this year there was a match in Charlotte that took fully EIGHT hours (includng the full two hour dinner break the participants so graciously took in consideration of everyone else). I had to wait for that match to finish and two other matches to be played to determine an opponent for my next match. THAT is ridiculous. And who got clocked? Not the first match, but the next three.
In Denver a couple of weeks ago I should have been playing a round, along with everyone else, at the end of the dinner break Saturday. But I had to wait three more hours !! And then they clocked my match !! (not that I minded, but you see how ridiculous it gets).
If nothing else the TDs should put repeat offenders on a 'slow list' and make them play every one of their matches on a clock.
