"If you win this game you are at -2, -3, which is only slightly better than 50%. A gammon puts you out, so gammons are worth almost but not quite 1 here."

The score if you lose is also relevant. Winning a regular puts you at 60%, the gammon win puts you at 100%, a loss puts you at 17%. Risking 43 to gain 40.
