In Response To: Peoria time default and summary of issues (David Rockwell)

David, it feels good to vent, I know.

If the Liebster match went down as you stated, then I have no sympathy for him losing on time.

Regarding your summary of the collective wisdom, of course opinions are going to be all over the map, since that's one of the purposes of the forum - a place for people to express divergent opinions.

Am I correct in assuming you and/or your wife directed the Peoria tournament?

I'd be willing to bet that the overwhelmingly vast majority of posters here that have ever been to an ABT tournament have nothing but admiration and gratitude for anyone who has ever directed an ABT event. I certainly do. (Let's not get into the exceptions now, Ray).

I've been to 11 ABTs in 5 venues - Pittsburgh, Charlotte, Cleveland, Michigan, Thousand Islands - and I'll be very surprised if the primary motivation for the directors to hold these events is not the love of the game. Making money (if any) is a secondary consideration, and any profit made is well deserved, and if divided by the hours put into preparing and organizing the event, would amount to peanuts. My bet is that your motivation is no different.

Likewise, I suspect that the motivation for the overwhelming majority of players expressing opinions in favor of clocks is for the same reason- the love of the game. I'd be surprised if even a single person here in favor of clocks is thinking, "hmm, if I can just get clocks in all matches I'd really have an edge I didn't have before".

I think most of the clock proponents here want to make the tournaments a more enjoyable experience for everyone, and anything that can be done to eliminate the long waits in brackets is a positive step, and clocks can go a long way towards this end.

I do not expect or want a tournament director to have to spend a single dime to buy clocks. As I and others have said, the cost of a clock, which will last for years, is such a ridiculously small part of the expense of attending even a single ABT event, players should be expected to bring them.

Players cannot mandate to tournament directors, but they can make suggestions. I am not for telling any tournament director what to do. I am a local club tournament director myself, so I know what goes into running small local tournaments, and this just adds to my appreciation for what you and all other ABT directors do.

I would like to see all ABT events as "Clocks Allowed", with players expected to bring their clocks and set their clocks. But each ABT director should decide on his own. If a tournament's clock policy, including time settings, is defined clearly in the brochure and consistently applied at the tournament, I have no complaints. Tournament directors shouldn't have to spend a dime on clocks. The casual player or the cheapskate player doesn't have to spend a dime on a clock. He can use his opponent's.

Thanks again for running the Peoria tournament, even though I didn't attend it, because you are promoting the game, and you have my utmost respect and thanks for that.
