Clock Use - Definitions

In Response To: Clocks Allowed (KenB)

The DBgF terminology makes sense to me:

1. Clock Option. Two opponents have the option to agree to use a clock.

2. Clock Preference. If either opponent prefers that a clock be used, the match will be clocked.

3. Clock Obligation. Players are obliged to use a clock.

For ABT tournaments in 2008/09, I think that clock option is appropriate for intermediate flights, clock preference ought to be a minimal standard for all rounds in open flights, and clock obligation ought to be the standard, if not for all open flight rounds, then at least for quarter-, semi- and final rounds.

I realize that scheduling problems can begin with the first slow match in any early round. Many players would be happy if all open flight rounds were clocked. But some directors may be reluctant to make clocks obligatory for all rounds, in part because they do not have enough clocks for a round of 64 and don't wish to require that all attending players bring clocks. Making clocks obligatory for at least some rounds would affirm the view (and encourage clock-reluctant players to share that view) that clocks improve tournaments, because they help keep tournaments on schedule and because (as Stick mentioned) they minimize other problems, too, like premature rolling and disagreements over dice rolls.

Whatever clock use any particular ABT director decides to adopt, the ABT clock rules should incorporate a statement that (1) includes the definitions and (2) specifies that the invitations to the various ABT tournaments will state which rounds/flights will be played with clock option, preference, or obligation. That way, anyone who reads an invitation would be able to know what the terminology means, simply by referring to the official ABT rules.
