Re: Suggestion of bringing own clock

This is a good idea. However, players are required to bring their own boards now and that doesn't work so well. I have noticed that several Championship players regularly attend some of the tournaments that I attend and never bring a board. These are players with several tournament wins under their belt.

Anecdote 1: Player "Jim" (not real name) is Championship player, many wins, has borrowed my board at 4 different tournaments -- does not bring his board ever, despite the facts that 1) he obviously has one at home and didn't bring it and 2) can probably afford to buy a new one at most tournaments. On top of that, he can never seem to remember my name. He does, however, seem to remember that I'm the one to go to when he needs a board for the next round.

Anecdote 2: On the first day of a tournament last year, the Championship division was beginning first, then Intermediate division. I was patiently waiting for the Intermediate Division postings when a Championship-level player espies me sitting there with a board, not playing. He asks to borrow my board. I explained that I was going to need it in ten minutes when the Intermediate postings went up. He actually SNEERED at me.

Anecdote 3: This one happens to everyone I'm sure. I lend my board to a friendly player I see regularly at tournaments. Afterwards, I am unable to locate all of the non-dice/checker contents that were in my set before lending (scoresheets with notes from earlier matches, leaflets for future tourneys, etc.).

I have been generous in the past about lending out my board, but am starting to bend away from this. I certainly would be leery about purchasing a clock only to have the same people try to hit me up for that as well because they can't be bothered to pack a board and clock.
