In Response To: Congrats Barry!! (Evan)

Thanks Evan! You were responsible for one of my previous close calls with ABT points when you beat me in the Last Chance finals in Charlotte this year, the same tourney that propelled Bob Koca on his path to stardom when he won it. I hope you'll join me in the Open level.

I'm not worthy of being mentioned in the same sentence with Neil and Stick when it comes to backgammon and error rates. My goal is just to continue to improve my game, there's plenty of room for that, and if I get to the point where I'm considered a tough out in the bracket I'll be pleased.

I think I played a pretty solid match in the finals, I'm sure I made some mistakes but I don't think I did anything particularly rancid.

The match started out just like all of my matches on Saturday- I had unbelievable dice, and turned three consecutive strong double/takes (I was much more certain they were indeed takes than I was with some of the ones I took from Petko in the semis) from Bill into redouble/drops with some amazing turnarounds en route to a 7-0 lead to 11. (In my four 11-pt matches on Saturday I gave up a total of 10 points. Not bragging at all, just explaining how hot I was). But then the match turned around completely and Bill whittled away one or two points at a time to tie it a 7-7. In fact at 7-5 I was very very lucky to get off the gammon with a 2-cube. I actually pulled a Bob Koca patented 5-5 escape to become a race favorite for a brief bit but gave it back during the bearoff. After Bill won to make it 7-7 he asked for a short break which I was glad to see having lost a 7-0 lead. I joked that I scored the first touchdown and that Bill scored the second touchdown to tie it but that I was going to get the ball back. Well after the break things started to go my way again, although not without some swings and some more good rolls, and after two double/drops to take a 9-7 lead, we came down to a race where I held a 63-72 pip advantage. I thought about it a while, whether I should be timid or put the match on the line, and I remembered Ray's advice "RIVET the watchers, RIVET the watchers", so I spun the cube, Bill took and redoubled for the match. We sparred for a few rolls, then I busted a couple of sets to pretty much sew it up. I was quite relieved believe me especially after going from 7-0 to 7-7.
