This is obvious to me, but is it provable?
Sure: if the match equity at -2:-2 is 50%, and I have a strategy that wins 50% from -2:-2, then that strategy is an optimal strategy. QED.
Note that this argument has essentially no backgammon content.
Now, I still have to show you my strategy, and prove that it wins 50% of the time, but that's straightforward. And since the strategy involves doubling at my first legal opportunity, the argument is not affected by funny middlegame positions with a centered cube. The only technical bit of business needed is to show that I can't lose my market before my first opportunity to double.
