This is an easily understood phenomenon. If you are like most players, you tend to figure out what the other player should do on each of his plays. Obviously, your opponent will often play something different than what you think is 'best'. However, when you analyze your own play, you always do what you think you should do. For your side of the board, this always adds up zero errors. For your opponent, there is always a number of plays that you think are errors. Thus, for most players with any 'self-esteem' about their own BG abilities, they always think they play better than their opponent.
However, at times I find plays I make that I'm pretty sure are errors, even though each time I still am making my best effort to make the best play. You'll hear me comment from time to time things like '3 to 2 I get this one wrong...'
