In Response To: Peoria 8 cube (Stick)

I should NOT have redoubled this. I thought about it for a long time... My first thought was I know this isn't a double. Secondly, Stick was a little impatient due to the bad prop results immediately before. He took two cubes quickly and had turned them around, in fact he had already redoubled me in this game... Now was it my turn? Anyway, he thought for a long time before he took this. Many opponents would pass a similar redouble trying to protect their lead. I knew Stick was taking, but after a couple of minutes I decided I didn't care about the open 6 point so much I'd bring builders and fight for it or make it. I would let him make the ace point, it was too far away from my builders, my plan was to build the 6. Anyway, in the end I talked myself into redoubling to 8... and one of the things that preceeded my recent successes in ABT events over the last two years is this thought that works for me:

If I find myself trying to talk myself into doubling, then it is probably a little bit early, (because I tend to be a little too aggressive with the cube), so I should WAIT. The second and more important reason not to redouble Stick is there was no chance he was going to pass in my estimation. He is an excellent player and he will probably evaluate the position correctly and he has little or no fear. Steve Sax might pass this one, (he is cautious), and plenty of other B grade Open players. Steve is A+, btw, just cautious.

If I had a hunch this was early... Then why ship it to someone who is both sharp and a little steamed? He was even more unlikely to give up anything because of the bad beat in game 1 of the prop half an hour earlier!

The reason I made a mistake was, I had myself convinced it was right over the table. I doubled after quite a bit of thought, it wasn't fast. In fact, I wanted Stick to check it to see if it wasn't a DROP after the match.

He was right on to take, and I was wrong to redouble. When in doubt go with your first instinct! Stick got a measure of revenge by putting 5 men up and gammoning my ASS... Winning our match 18-0, and he deserved it. Other players would have given me two points, they do it all the time!
