Good players evaluate the race and all but decide: Backgammon is not a risk free game, I may get hit and lose with my play... but I will at least lose trying to win... With my boots on!

The question is what gives you the best chance to win. Ugly can be beautiful. Safe play is also a matter of evaluating risk, it's just a different judgment.

I think the racing lead is large enough that not hitting is correct vs. a closed board, at least when you add in the wastage and Blue's fail-to-escape chances.
