flipping a coin

Get your definitions off dictionary.com or they don't count.
Heh -- we do live in an Internet Age but I usually grab my American Heritage Dictionary off the shelf. Sometimes I use Google's handy "define" feature. I don't use dictionary.com.
You also run into the problem of defining a coin as a "tool" or "device" which by their definitions most likely is not.
AHD defines "mechanical" in part as "1. Of or pertaining to machines or tools" and defines "tool" in part as "3. Anything used in the performance of an operation; an instrument." Editorial discussion goes on to say that "Tool can apply broadly to any device for doing or facilitating work." Dictionary.com defines tool in part as "5. Anything used as a means of accomplishing a task or purpose." So, I think it could be argued that a coin being used to decide a cube action meets the broad definition of "tool."
Anyway, all dictionary nitpickings aside, I'll stand by my interpretation of ABT Rule 1.5 as being intended to bar the use of all outside aids.
I agree with you that the DBgF rules are well written. They're often clearer and more specific than the ABT rules. But they're also much longer, and in several sections the extra length does not do much but spell out what the shorter ABT rules imply.
