In Response To: Rollout Settings on GNU vs Snowie (Geoff Arnold)

This issue came up at GammOnline about a year ago. I saved some of the answers regarding GNU rollouts. Your question seems to be more directed towards Snowie. Setting Snowie rollouts is simplier. To obtain the best results, select precise, 3 ply checker, 3 ply cubing, and cube value 16 settlement. Tom Keith wrote the below post that was so helpful to me that I saved it.

In case you haven't read it, see Albert Silver's introduction to Gnu Backgammon. This tutorial is a couple of years old, but will give you a solid introduction to the program.

I have archived a number of postings about Gnu Backgammon which you may find helpful. See http://www.bkgm.com/rgb/rgb.cgi?menu+gnubackgammon. You will see some older articles that mention the "reduced speed" feature of Gnu Backgammon. This feature was removed a last year in favor of a new pruning net which works even better.

There are two common problems people run into when first doing rollouts in Gnu Backgammon. (1) If you are doing a 2-ply rollout and use the user-defined move filter (the default), be sure to click Modify and turn off the 1-ply level within the 2-ply filter. Otherwise, only one move gets through to the 2-ply evaluator. (2) If you stop a rollout and change the settings, you can't continue the rollout and expect the new settings to take effect. GnuBG will continue with your original settings. See this post from Jim Segrave. Hope that helps.

Tom
