In Response To: My clock proposal for ABT events for 2009 and beyond (neilkaz)

I like it. Good proposal. I will sign on the dotted line.

Stick: I have to admit I'm not as patient. I've only been around the (diminishing?) scene for a few years and there has been incessant clock talk. Then I google it and note that you (ABT ppl) have discussed it for decades on end. Get it the fuck over with already, everyone knows overall it's best for the game and the only real drawbacks are minor short term issues.

I agree, the fact that this discussion has gone on so long is somewhat ridiculous.

Neil: The penalty for timing out is reduced to 2 pts for just one year, to make it seem less harsh for those unfamiliar with clocks to time out.

I am not really opposed to this, but realize that it is going to be complicated and unintuitive and you are going to have some very weird rulings on this matter in 2009 (e.g. where is the Crawford game).

Neil: If there still aren't enough clocks to go around (if it happens, likely round 1 only) then the director decided who uses his clocks, and the clockless matches are still fined $5.

$5 apiece may be a little harsh (particularly if no clock is loaned out), but this is a good suggestion. It provides players with incentive to use a clock and allows TDs to not only recoup their initial losses but even make a long-term profit.

Bob: There was a proposal about being allowed to restart your time after a cocked roll. It solves the problem but gives another about having to constantly be hitting the clock. What if this were allowed only when the pool time is 15 seconds or lower?

I do feel that someone shouldn't flag, or even use up their reserve time, by cocking their dice a few times. I also feel that the current cocked dice rule is inherently not really fair, even if the difference is minimal. I think there are two reasonable ways to solve it: 1) the buffer is reset, 2) the player on roll stops the clock, picks up the dice, rolls, the opponent starts the clock when a legal roll is thrown. I honestly don't see a problem with either of those. There's no way to angle shoot.

Barry: I'd like to see 15 seconds delay become the standard rather than 12 seconds. Probably my second biggest complaint is weak shaking of the dice. The shorter time delay may cause players to feel rushed and not give the dice the adequate shake they deserve. I actually think 2/15 is a very good setting that is a good compromise between giving adequate time to think in crucial spots while still discouraging ridiculously slow play. I wouldn't mind seeing it permanent. I doubt it if it would scare more than a very very small number of players away.

I agree with this. I think 2/15 provides adequate leisure time for shaking dice however many times you want to shake them, drinking some water, rolling cocked dice, etc., yet still doesn't allow 7-point matches to drag on for 3+ hours. I do somewhat prefer it to 2/12. I am not sure how 1.5/15 compares to 2/12 but I think I would prefer 1.5/15. My feeling is that if a TC is too fast for Larry Liebster to play with, then it's too fast in general. I do not feel that special arrangements should be made for handicapped people--if they are delaying the tournament, then there is a problem. If they are not delaying the tournament but the TCs are too fast for them, then the TCs are too fast in general.

Stick: I think the lack of clocks is demi-illusional too. I have a clock, Bob has a clock, Bill has a clock, Chuck has 3 clocks, Neil, I don't know if you own one but know you would at the drop of a hat along with many other ppl here. The directors wouldn't need to provide as many clocks as it seems.

Making clocks mandatory would cause an immediate shortage of clocks since not all ABT players are going to run out and buy one tomorrow. But in the long run there is no issue in my mind. It's really just that easy. A transitional year may avoid a shortage of clocks.

Anyway, where do I sign?
