I don't hate this play. With only 8 checkers going forward you need to position them really purely, B/23 8/5 gives 2 more covers for the 5 but is blotty. Although B/23 8/5 may be better for making the 3 point or bar point, those aren't big considerations, since the 5 is the point you want. I believe the back checker is better off on the 22 point than the 23 point. They look very close to me, no strong preference between either one.
