Plimpton played backgammon, too--I saw him play, Las Vegas 1979. He wasn't bad at all. One would expect, don't you know, that anyone with a High American accent such as his (or T.S. Eliot's), would play backgammon, which was popular in High American circles. Some of Da Wife's people were in those circles some generations ago, or at least close, somewhere on the fringes.
