I’m sympathetic to Chuck’s reasoning, but I’m worried about three things if I don’t hit: (1) being behind in the race, (2) that White might escape his straggler over the next few moves, and (3) that White will now cover his blot on the 17, after which he would be in better shape to be able to avoid getting hit from my anchor while bearing in. Hitting, risky as it is, mitigates all 3 concerns.

When in doubt, hit. ;-)
