It's relatively unintuitive to think that the "when" is of primary importance. Although EMG is also problematic, MWC numbers can just kind of be noise.
That said, I don't know whether EMG on cube decisions makes a lot of sense.
The following error is a .1217 EMG whopper. But it only costs 0.028% MWC at Cr, -20, whereas it costs 6.087% MWC at DMP. It's unintuitive to think that it's that much of a grossly larger error when it occurs at DMP--I would say the error is the same magnitude at either score.
