Making the 12 point doesn't seem too bad, but it is passive and it doesn't address the issue of being behind in the race.

If you pick and pass then you leave 6 shots it is true, but you will enter twice on the average when that happens so you are not dead yet. That reduces that game winners to 4.5 or 5 for White. When missed you have a relatively flexible positon and considerably better standing in the race, you won't be able to come home completely safely, but you can always play for shot reduction.

Once in awhile White will fan a couple of turns and that is a big bonus. Not hit, White has a few jokers like 55, 66... So getting hit only doubles your inherent risk.

Pick and pass.
