I generally make the best checker plays I can find. I was talking more about altering one's post-Crawford cube play, either to drop or take things that are close to the border, or play on vs. not play on. I never try to complicate the game by playing 24/20 6/5 with an opening 41, I just split. Sometimes I slot, but not often.
You make a good point in that making errors tends to reduce your advantage. ELO-adjusted decisions are very poorly understood IMHO. Working out a good estimate of ELO and then accurately adjusting your cube handling is a difficult thing to do, and there are very few rollouts or analysis here.
I do feel that vs. weaker players I don't want 8-cubes flying around and will go out of my way to prevent that--if it means blundering then so be it, depending on how much weaker they are. Against stronger players I am generally more inclined to just jack the cube up. I rarely alter my decisions to account for ELO on initial cubes unless they are severely gammonish.
