Without doubt the MOST abused idea in cube strategy is to "jack up" the cube against stronger players.

First off, when you are good enough to understand that concept, then you are probably too good to use it. In your case, Matt, very few players are in your league. You may not realize that yet, but once you do, and act accordingly, (ie: stop giving your expert opponents too much respect, then your results will improve geometrically. And oh, by the way you took second place at the LAST tournament!

Doubling early advantages against expert opponents puts more arrows in the EXPERT's quiver.

I suggest an exercise for any boogers who'd like to try it. Play a few matches against Gnu or Snowie and use the jack up the cube strategy. Say play ten matches each way, your normal game vs. JackGammon.

You will soon see how the bots destroy early cubing, and then you can imagine what you have been giving away to your expert opponents by employing such a strategy.

Early doubling can result in some spectacular successes occaisionally when your dice hold up, but the reality is that the crashes are even more spectacular and frequent.

I like to see early doubles from my opponents, because it makes my decisions easy and adds hidden pitfalls and road hazzards to my over-eager opponent's future.
