First off, when you are good enough to understand that concept, then you are probably too good to use it.

Yes, it's hard to get right. And for a developing player, making second best plays is a bad habit to get into. But we can talk about the other side of the equation: if you're the stronger player, you do want to be careful about the 4- and 8-cubes you accept, even if they look like clear takes theoretically. Some amount of shading your takepoints is needed, particularly in low-skill positions.
