AFAIK they do not play with the cube in eastern european countries. They either play a one pointer (called a line), or a cubeless three pointer (called a match). Backgammons count as gammons and there might even be some subtle rule differences concerning moving less than the maximum number of pips, which might be not allowed (e.g. 5/3 3/off instead of 5/off 2/off).
