The problem I thought with hitting in the OP is that even when it works it doesn't work. I am behind by 43 pips before the hit so I am still behind by 29 pips after hitting, hitting in your position evens up the race. Also I still have 4 checkers back after hitting in OP and my board is weaker with only 7 men going forward and the awkward combination of 6 + 3 point. Here you have only two men back, 8 men forward, and the 4 point--all of these factors point towards hitting.

Not hitting is still a blunder in the OP even in spite of the weakness of the hit, it's just clearer to hit here.
