There's the general principal that when you have a solid advantage that you should avoid the volatile plays, improve your position and give a nice efficient double. You don't have to take major risks to win, you just need to turn the cube. That may certainly be part of the picture here. However, rollouts show both plays to be dead even at DMP.

Ultimately, I suspect the answer here is purely technical. How the dice play over the next set of shakes. Over the board, in an opening position, I'm not going to sit there and enumerate the rolls for the next two turns like a bot and crunch the equities. I'm applying concepts and putting the checkers where they belong.

That said, and even knowing the rollout results, there is no force in the universe that is going to prevent me from slotting in this position, unless perhaps it is gammon save.
