So there's definitely something odd with the neural-net evaluations.

This isn't totally correct. In positions that are very unusual GnuBG sometimes is quite off. This is not totally new, you find some examples if you dig long enough. On most other positions GnuBG judgement is quite excellent as we all know, so the surprise in such rare cases is large.

I assume that is due to GnuBG's learning algorithm.

BTW BGBlitz doesn't moves 2x8-6 but

Green - 0 Red - 6 in a 7 point match. Crawford game. Red to move 1-1

Evaluation (EMG) ========== 1. 0.967 mwp / 0.618 8-7, 8-7, 6-5, 5-4

0.809 0.554 0.134 - 0.191 0.005 0.000 2. 0.965 mwp / 0.602 (-0.001) 8-7, 8-7, 6-5, 4-3

0.801 0.551 0.130 - 0.199 0.006 0.000 3. 0.964 mwp / 0.592 (-0.002) 8-7, 7-6, 6-5, 5-4

0.796 0.564 0.159 - 0.204 0.004 0.000

makes much more sense to me than GnuBG choice....

P.S: put the 15th checker on the 23
