If it's an external FW (what Bailey said), which it most likely is, you're a little fuckered. First of all, for MSN, as long as you can still use one of the following ports; 80, 8080, or 3128 (http ports/web surfing) you can sign into messenger through MSN Webmessenger

To do anything else you'd have to go through another computer, as mentioned. logmein.com is free, easy to use, easy to setup. Other than that there are all sorts of VPNs etc... that you could set up.

"Socks-servers" as you called them were most likely Socks 4 or Socks 5 proxies. I doubt they'll be of use to you here but I'd suggest innocently asking around to what happened at work. Let us know what you're still allowed to do.
