If he holds anchor, then he ought to slot the ace point and save a 6. Otherwise it is a half way measure and he will have to leave with a 6 anyway next turn.

OTOH, since I think it is wrong to stay, then maybe the next best play is to at least make a crossover while holding your anchor, staying and saving a crossover in this situation might just be the worst of both worlds.
