42 is easier to play in the opening ?

I do gammon counts, though technical bearoffs/gammon races are not the strongest part of my game now. I remember Doug Zare wrote an article for GammonVillage on using EPC to estimate the gammon (basically just a gammon count + some modifier for wastage). I'd look at that if I was really interested in the technicalities, usually I just look at crossovers, but GC is more accurate than crossovers, I think. You can get a good glance at it just by looking at crossovers though.
