in general, the longer you leave something open the more memory it will suck up...but 700k!?

Often yes, but only due to errors of the programmers. Managed langages help a lot.

700 MB (I can't believe anyone doing rolloust cares for 700KB) is quite a lot and that issue should be forwarded to the GnuBG MAilinglist (if none of the team members has read the posting)
