Call me a snob, French-Canadians are a far cry from French, love them anyway though. Any culture who thinks they can make *worker* a verb for a romance language... puke. Would you want yourself referred to as American-Canadian (noting they use *garborator* as a word) or American-English (too easy).
A chouette is a female owl (whereas a male owl is a hibou). Chouette has many other uses though I've never heard it in the sense you mentioned "The other is an affectionate term one might use in addressing a child.", then again, you asked a French/Canadian. Chouette usually means "neat, cool, interesting" and a very common phrase for all of you looking to your travel guides "Ca c'est chouette!"
Steve already gave you what you were looking for so I'll stop rambling for a moment.
