A few decades ago, a couple of times I knew people who might be on the local news "tonight". They were told that depending on how the news flow went between "now and air time", their segment may or may not make it onto the local news. I've since learned that "they" always shoot more material than they need, just in case it is a slow news day.
By the way I don't remember what my acquaintances did that might've put them on the news, I'm sure it was some sort of "local person does good" kind of thing, sort of a 15 mintes of fame kind of thing. They never made it onto tv though, so they never got their fame, and this probably explains why I don't remember what they were supposed to be on tv for.
Anyway, to make a long story short (oops, too late), "bumping" segments is standard operating procedure on tv. For all we know, you got bumped because the camera operator had you out of focus, and they were too embarressed to tell you.
