Get everyone a copy of Magriel's Backgammon as the textbook. Then cover the important concepts it presents. You can supplement of course and perhaps provide some better or more accurate examples. It is a book that people can take away and always refer back to as a refresher.
I would also devote a session to "Intro to GNU BG" where you go over the basics of using the program to play and how to analyze your play and review your mistakes. Assign everyone a homework task to play one game and analyze it. Have them print out or save as a file and email to you a position showing a big mistake they made. That will force them to go home, download, install and use the program. Perhaps you can spend time at a future session to go over their positions with the group and talk about how to think about it to arrive at the correct decision. This will all let people walk away from the course with the ideas on how to continue their learning on their own.
