CLOCKtroversy 1

First, glad to see someone pumping the auto industry economy in these trying times. Those $$ games in LA must be going well.
I agree with some of the others that the use of Bronstein clocks without a time delay is antiquated and absurd. There are other ways to speed matches and a tourney w/o the elimination of the time delay feature.
Unfortunately, the use of clocks without time delays all too often introduce gamesmanship into a match, perhaps even moreso than good play toward a favorable end. Sounds as though the gamesmanship may have prevailed here.
I know Norm well and have played a number of matches against him. As you report he is a great player and a consummate gentleman. In our several matches using Bronstein clocks with time delays, Norm has never come close to running out of time. Even in untimed matches he is not, in my opinion, a particularly slow or deliberate player.
I do not know WCE and have only played him once. The few times I've been around him in tournaments he has seemed fairly low-key and mild-mannered. But, we all have our moments. I've been known to forcefully move my checkers around making a play, to slam down a cup, or to mutter (others might say shout) an expletive. Others do the same. I even had to dodge a flying, rebounding dice cup in LA that tried to find my nose -- I'll not name the quarterback of the projectile -- lololol. So, we could all do better -- and we should all try to limit our egregious behavior to non-personal exhibitions.
Obviously, I wasn't there for the event you describe, so I can't have an ultimate opinion. I think it unfortunate if Norm lost the match in the manner you described. Norm, though it is not his nature, probably should have been more assertive to protect his interests, WCE perhaps should have been more sensitive to the circumstances, and maybe Patrick should review his policies and his judgements -- obviously, it was still a raw subject last week. By the way, I have the whole California State Championship blow-up audio recorded vividly on my recording of my Super-32 match with Mark Antranikian as we played our DMP game -- and I'm not blaming anyone for any distractions resulting in my heartbreaking loss. lololol
Perhaps, too, observers, spectators, kibbitzers, and others should not interject themselves into such situations -- letting the participants and the director (or the director's committee) resolve disputes. I guess consequent opinions and discussions will always exist.
All of us need to be more aware of the rules and be more assertive in demanding they be observed -- unfortunately, it seems there is always someone willing to bend or abuse the rules to their favor.
