I agree with you, Gregg. These things should not be commented on to the players.

Section 1.7 of the ABT rules state that spectators observing improprieties or irregularities should speak privately to the director. Now it is true that what exactly constitutes an impropriety or an irregularity may be open to debate. But this is probably why the rules state that the spectator should speak privately to the director, who is ultimately responsible for deciding if any particular set of circumstances should be acted upon.

In the case at hand here, where Player A purportedly spills a drink, and Player B's clock remains running while Player B is trying to help get the mess cleaned up, I clearly consider this an "irregularity" that falls under Section 1.7. And if brought up to me, I would rule, in the spirit of Section 1.1, "No set of rules should deprive the Director of his freedom of judgment or prevent him from finding the solution dictated by fairness and compatible with the circumstances of a particular case.", to restore some time to Norm's clock.

I am in no way assailing the decision made by MFIC Pat at the time, because I do not have all of the facts, I do not know Pat personally, and his reputation as a director is unimpeachable. Ideally a spectator concerned enough to notice this particular "clocktroversy" would have made a note of the amount of time on Norm's clock when the situation developed.
