' You pointed out that Norm's clock was running..Pat was busy elsewhere..you have two logical choices..1) add 2 or 3 minutes to Norm's clock ..or 2) get Pat no matter what.'

I called for Pat to adjust the time, Norm suggested the other option to save time. It was a very small event and it rated to have no bearing, but when it did it created ill will. In the future I would ‘always’ make sure it was resolved properly to avoid such an occurrence.

' Your non shaking and fast dice scooping vs Norm really wasn't fair play unless he's doing it also. But do to his condition, he really can't do it. You can certainly shake dice one and dump them in a second or two and that is what you should've done as long as Norm was shaking.'

I agree this is the one area where I should have handled things differntly. We were both rolling quickly but I have a huge physical advantage over Norm and I was not shaking on my last few rolls, due to fear of my clock expiring. I didn’t even think about it, I was just trying to roll as quickly as possible. For an experienced player, I have very little experience with the clock, but I have seen others do this before in a time crunch, no clock delay situation, and nothing was said. It is competitive instinct. Norm never asked me to shake the dice, he knew why I wasn't.

'If you announced the score as 12-9 when it sb 12-8 and Ray heard you and agreed, either he made an honest mistake or was taking a shot at you. Were you guys also using one of those big score cards that goes by the side of the board ? It makes real sense to use one and to agree with your opp after each game that the displayed score is correct. '

In fairness to Ray he said nothing when I announced the score and as I said; ‘I can not presume to know whether he was paying attention to me when I announced the score.’ We were not using a big scorecard.

4) Joe you made a mistake in scoring and then stopped the clock to pass. This is time to be really appologetic and explain things to your opp. If my score sheet had correctly stated 12-8 while your's had 12-9 and then I vaguely recalled you say 12-9, I'd have let you slide here. However, in Ray's defense, watching your non shakes vs Norm likely pushed him over the edge and he was within the rules and his rights to insist that you'd pass.

As I said, I have very little experience using clocks and I was not sure what exactly constituted a pass. I wanted to see the rules for clocks, which I had never read. I know that when you pass you center the clock. I know that centering the clock indicates a pass. I was not sure whether centering the clock without saying I pass was irreversible. I wanted to look at the rules. It turns out I could have centered the clock to call over the director and adjust the score and then decide whether to take or pass, but that was not my intention. I centered the clock intending to pass. I said so when asked. The rules also state that the director has discretion in regards to fair play. Pat asked Ray if he had heard me announce the incorrect score and Ray said no. If he had said yes, the ruling may have been different. The only person jeopardized by my scoring error was me. I accepted the ruling. I think it was fair, but not without question. It was a huge error, but it was mine.

I think clocks should never be used without a delay. It would have eliminated the problem with Norm and the non-shaking. What is fair in such a situation, a half-shake, single shake, two shakes? Also clock rules should be handed out to every player that competes in a tournament that uses them
