Clocking... my 2 cents worth

i'm still kind of on the fence when it comes to clocks. while i dont consider my self a slow player (if anything i play too fast) in the ABT event i attended in baltimore i feel i was an indirect victim of slow play and it cost me. by that i mean while i didn't play slowly nor did any of my opponents but someone, somewhere along the line did otherwise i wouldn't have been asked to start a match to complete whatever round it was at 12:30 in the morning. by the time the match ended it was almost 2 a.m. it was a 7 point match and it went 7-6 for my opponent but i felt i could have won if i hadn't made a mental mistake late in the last game. it was late and i was tired, and i feel if i had been more mentally alert i would have made the correct play. i'm not complaining so much that i lost, shit happens i accept it and have moved on but i can see how if the matches had been clocked things would have moved along more quickly, ergo we all would have been in bed getting a good nights sleep by that time.

i think the biggest obstacle to clocking backgammon matches is that its something new, something that is not part of the backgammon players mindset. chess players accept it because its always been a part of their culture while it isn't for us. so how do you change the mindset? using the clock more is the obvious answer.

many places online clock their matches like TMG and Gammonsite offers the clock for regular play and all the tourney matches are clocked so it really shouldn't be that huge of a deal getting used to. i think if more local clubs have their weekly events timed that help the transition as well.

in a perfect world all tourney's would start and end on time and things would always run smoothly. i don't know if clocks are the answer but it certainly can't hurt to at least give it a try.

here is a question for all those tournament veterans concerning my situation in baltimore. could i have said/insisted that i wasn't comfortable starting a match so late and asked to have played it in the morning (assuming my opponent was agreeable as well)?
