Clocking

Any change in life has its cost. The easiest course is the status quo. But never changing means never improving. The game we know and love would not be what it is today if there weren't people in the past bold enough to try new things.
The problem with the current (unclocked) rules is that different people have different ideas about what an appropriate amount of thinking time is. And who's to say who's right?
In many ways clock rules actually create a more relaxed atmosphere. You don't feel pressured (by your opponent) to make a play if you want to spend some time thinking. You don't have hard feelings against your opponent if he spends an inordinate amount of time thinking about what (to you) is an obvious play. Fewer matches will be behind schedule, so you don't feel pressure from the TD to play faster than normal.
I think it was Matt who said the use of clocks in tournament backgammon will the game more professional. When clocks were introduced to chess, I bet there was a LOT of complaining. But clocks made competitive chess a better game. And that's what matters.
Yes, clocks work against newer players. The solution is to have shorter match lengths and longer time controls in the novice and intermediate sections.
