CLOCKtroversy 1

BARRY: I am in no way assailing the decision made by MFIC Pat at the time, because I do not have all of the facts, I do not know Pat personally, and his reputation as a director is unimpeachable. Ideally a spectator concerned enough to notice this particular "clocktroversy" would have made a note of the amount of time on Norm's clock when the situation developed.
Agreed, Barry, and as a spectator concerned enough to notice the amount of time Norm lost, I remained silent. Mainly because I was not involved and Norm is a big boy, and so is Joe. I had no reason to doubt Norms ability to stand up for himself, or Joe's capacity to be fair... So why violate the rules of kibitzers remaining silent??
Secondly, Norm is a very close friend of mine, and has been for a long time. Any comment on my part might well be judged to favor Norm, as I am sure it has indeed been interpreted since I posted clocktroversy 1. I avoided a conflict of interest at the time, though I knew approximately how much time expired on Norm's clock and would have been a valuable reference for either player had I been consulted.
The end result of the match was unpalatable to me, and to Norm, but Patrick was oblivious. Without consultation and on our own, Norm and I both contacted Patrick independently to voice our concerns.
What happened there surely had an influence on my hard line approach in clocktroversy 2. Plain and simple.
