Note that 13/5 still wins the most games. It sure did feel right.

The equity difference comes from the gammon wins. And that is because covering the 2 point puts you in a better position to pounce once one of the anchors are broken (which could be soon). And if you don't cover now, you probably won't cover next turn either since you'll be safetying that remaining checker from the mid.
