This is most definately not my advice. I believe that this comes from Kent Goulding, but should be taken with a grain of salt. ie..I split an opening 54 and you roll 31, do you really need to waste time figuring out what play is 2nd best ?

But when it is a complicated situation and you roll something that's unclear here to play, you may wish to find 2 or 3 alternative plays, and try to determine which is the best play.

Sometimes when there's several reasonable alternatives, one play will dominate a couple of others which can be discarded since .."if I play this 5, then that 1 is clearly better" so I can discard the other two, and now compare the remaining candidate to the other way(s) of playing the 5".

Anyhow, the advice to always look for the 2nd best play is most definately not mine. If it has been attached to my name somewhere, I don't want credit for it, noting that this is not how I play.
