I assume you mean after hitting with the 3, which back man do you play the 5 with?

First of all, when duplicating, you must actually be duplicating something. If white is on the bar, what number can he roll in which he would ever be confronted with a choice (even a bad one) of how to play the 4 (or even 1-3)? Nothing. So there is no reduction in the number of good rolls for white.

As I see it, the choice of 5 boils down to boring technical considerations of how do your numbers play if you are missed. How many numbers cover the blot on the 4 point? By playing 20/15, you get two additional covers with 6-5, and even 6-6 becomes decent.

I wish there was some big concept that could be learned from this. Sometimes you just need to put on your bot hat and see how all of the numbers play.
