I agree with Richard but have to add something also. What I learned from Neil here, is that he don't like most of those rules of thumbs or even some common accepted formulas. All those generalizations are in fact simplified models which are useful for beginners or intermediates or advanced players but should be always taken with "grain of salt" because backgammon is more continuum of various positions, situations, types, mostly without strong border between them. I like more his concept of trying to understand particular position in depth and make conclusion for that one only, even it is a word about simple race position without contact but with some wastage in bear off. Of course Neil is one of the most finest players in the world but also one who don't like wrongly and insufficient precise thoughts about backgammon and is many times ready to make them more clear on these forums.
