Haha, I have heard this a few times now, but I think that you associate Petko too closely with backgames. I could be wrong, but isn't this because he played a couple/few against Neil in a match last year?

Nobody any good STEERS towards backgames. They just suck and have way too many ways that they can go bad on you... Sometimes you just have no other viable alternative, and at those times it is simply best to embrace your situation and play the hell out of it, that's all. I am pretty sure I have played Petko more than anyone else ever has, (besides Snowie and Gnu), and I never noticed a tendency for him to play backgames excessively.

Is it possible your experience with him is limited or taken out of context?

I would also think that playing for backgames would result in a high error rate with the bots, and Petko consistently plays around 3 overall the last I heard.
