Gammons should scare you. Normally. At this score you can usually take down to about 25% wins holding the cube with no gammon losses, but the more gammons you lose, the more wins you need to take.

Neil's point was that with 40% wins you could take even if you got gammoned the entire other 60% of the time simply by recubing and thus killing the gammons. So since actually holding the cube has additional value, with 38% wins you should still have a take even if every loss was a gammon.
