One of Howard's comments about permitting clocks on demand was that it is a real problem to force someone that has never played with a clock before to "lose their virginity" in the first round of an ABT Open tournament. There is something to be said for that.

What if I never play anything except ABT Open tournaments?

The solution to this problem is so painfully simple. If a player is new to the clock scene, they can play with the clock non-punitively for the first go around. There are two possibilities: (1) they don't run out of time, in which case it's irrelevant, or (2) they run out of time, don't get penalized, but learn in a VERY objective way that they're playing too slowly.
