The solution to this problem is so painfully simple. If a player is new to the clock scene, they can play with the clock non-punitively for the first go around

Disagree. First of all, who keeps track of who has and who hasn't played with a clock before? Secondly, these are in theory open level players, suck it the fuck up. If you're an open level player, even the bottom of the barrel can scrape by using a clock.

No mercy - use it, no 1st time freebie. (jokes are too easy, I'll take a pass)
