In Response To: MCG -- Where is that clock/delay horror story? (Matt Cohn-Geier)

MCG.. "The fact that one guy is alive in three events, two of which are a round or two behind, should probably be a warning sign. I believe that initially they weren't going to clock the matches played on Saturday after the dinner break because it was clocks optional and both players (or all 4 in doubles) had to agree to play with a clock...are you kidding? But I think that was straightened out and at least the rounds after the dinner break on Saturday were clocked (mine were), but by then it was already a huge scheduling problem. Rich has to play doubles vs. Falafel, the winner of that has to play another doubles round that night, I have to play doubles that night @1AM, plus I have to play the semis @ 10AM on Sunday vs. Falafel (note that I haven't played a round here since Thursday), and then Falafel has a 12PM final in the main and if he wins the masters he also has a final in the masters and the possibility for a final in the doubles if he gets 2 wins there..."

Neil...1) Players who are alive in Masters should NOT be allowed to play in doubles ! This has been the source of more conflicts than I can count. Clocking all events won't solve this problem, it will help but it won't prevent the doubles/masters conflict on Sundays. Once again, players who are alive in either doubles or masters or the limited jackpot should NOT be permitted to play in doubles.

MCG..."Falafel lost in the doubles at least. I went back to my room to catch an hour's rest before they finally called me back to play at 1AM. I finish my doubles match @ 3AM, I ask Rich how his doubles match went, he replies "it hasn't started yet." I think Rich was there until 1AM every night and had to play Saturday at 3AM, but I'll let him fill in that story if he wants as I don't want to get the details wrong."

Neil...WTF with making people play at 3 AM ?!! 1 AM is rediculous enough. Why not the next morning at 10 AM instead ? Seriously...WTF with making players play a doubles match starting at 3 AM ??!!! Especially when Howard has continually said that he doesn't care for the Madison format because of the 9 pt match starting at 11PM Saturday night...when I consider that fact combined with a 3 AM start time, I am appalled to put it politely. So what if the side events run a bit late into Sunday afternoon ? Who cares ? The airport is close enough anyhow to that venue.

MCG..."Anyway, I have a lot of fun playing doubles, but it's very often more trouble than it's worth. If TDs are worried about losing players, consider that I'm seriously considering never playing doubles again unless it's clock mandatory, or on Sunday like Pat's tournament. I'm not sure how I got so far ahead of the bracket in the masters but I suspect that opting for a clock in every round was at least part of it."

Neil...as previously stated, I don't play doubles anymore unless the ENTIRE doubles is clocked or maybe if it is after most players are out of the main event like at Pat's. I didn't play doubles last time at Pat's since I was still involved with Masters.

MCG..."Anyway, ugh. I wish I had been able to play more on Saturday, or if not, at least be able to go into Manhattan for the day instead of waiting around to see which opponents were ready to play."

Neil...sickening isn't it...here's Matt, a new and promising player on the scene and he's quite unhappy with the way things were. Perhaps the community needs to reconsider the way things are run at some tourneys. One things for certain and that is that there are too many conflicts with side events. Perhaps there need to be fewer side events, but what is certain is that their scheduling could be improved and that these side events need to be clocked.

Neil...looking at the scheduling I can see some of the possible sources of troubles:

1) 3 hour dinner breaks ? Who needs that long for dinner in a metro area like that and at a nice hotel?

2) It seems that the main event wasn't what caused most of these problems, but I note 66 players with 15 buybacks. Why not limit it to 13 buybacks and just run a bracket of 64 with no byes ? I note a 10:30 start time for the last chance which is fine, but was the last chance progressive ? Had the last chance been progressive more players would have been out of the event and possibly playing side events money rounds and minimizing time pressure.

A PROGRESSIVE LAST CHANCE IS A MUST FOR ABT WEEKENDS. Then for players knocked out quickly, run blitzes, stop pots, or whatever.

3) 11 AM ..finals scheduled for all events. Why so early ? Why not use more of Sunday ? There's zillions of flights into and out of Newark and the airport is less than 30 min away by train. Was it the unneeded desire to finish early on Sunday that resulted in a couple matches well into the wee hours of Sunday morning ?

And once again...very seriously I have to ask, why make players play a doubles match at 3 AM (let alone 1 AM) ?

I say this stuff, not bcuz I am a primi-donna who wants it his way or the highway, but bcuz I care about the future of our game and continually I see many issues with conflicts preventing players from having as good a time as they should at tourneys.

.. neilkaz .. hopefully getting thru to people in charge, for the good of BG's future.
