Hi All,
The main problem with the Doubles format in Howard's tournaments that even mandatory clocks won't fully resolve, is that re-entries into the Doubles are allowed for several days until a full bracket is filled. This means that the bottom bracket is always playing "catch- up" while the team members are also trying to play both main matches and other side event matches. The logistics can be nightmarish for staff and players. Matt and I were thrilled with our New York results, but the journey to get there was frustrating.
Most ABT tournaments have a single starting time for Doubles, either Friday night when Doubles can be focused on and 3 rounds can be played without conflict, or on Sunday, as in Pat's tournaments, when only teams with no other conflicts are allowed to play. Even with this format, slow play can hold up a bracket, which is why Michigan will have mandatory clocks this year for the Open Doubles, which has always had a field of 32 teams in the past. I plan to have generous time controls, perhaps 3 minutes per point and 18 seconds per move.
Our goal this year is to get more players familiar and comfortable with using clocks. Side events such as the Doubles and Masters are a natural place to start.
