There are many problems with doubles that have been mentioned and all factors contribute to delays. Use of a clock would have kept my first nights doubles match from running 3 hours until 1 AM. Neil's suggestion of requiring doubles to proceed on Saturday night when one of the players is still alive in Masters AND/OR the Main would have enabled me to play doubles Saturday night right after the dinner break instead of after midnight. And I don't know why the $50 jackpot semifinal could not be played on Sunday morning. The impression I got was that after having the other semifinalist wait around until after 1 AM, nobody wanted to tell him to go home and come back early. That could have been solved by better planning. Carol's comments about accepting new entries far into the event is a valid concern and was certainly responsible for her and Matt having to play late. However I should point out that my quarterfinal was the last to start and it was the topmost quarterfinal on the draw sheet.
A 3 hour dinner break is nice. People can go into Manhattan and not have to panic about getting back. However, when someone like Falafel is alive in 3 events on Saturday night, the directors need to see this coming and make at least some matches go off during the dinner break. I don't think anyone would prefer to play at 3 AM over getting ONLY 90 minutes for dinner.
I don't want to take anything away from the tireless effort and thankless job that Howard and his staff did for this event. Tournament staff were in the room until 3:30 AM just like I was. They tried to do their best. However, it is important to learn from the mishaps and take action to prevent a repeat. Clearly the strategy of "must not upset anyone" by imposing clocks or making doubles teams play with a single player when a partner has had the misfortune to keep winning, is not working. Not upsetting anyone upsets everyone. Change is required. State the new rules. Enforce them. People will adjust, and quickly.
