I agree that doubles is only one of many events going on, and I also agree that it can be a very enjoyable experience (or I wouldn't have entered). However, in the effort to introduce clocks, it is nice to stand up and say clock everything, no exceptions, period. But sometimes it is necessary to pick your battles and move deliberately but steadily in the right direction.
Doubles consumes 4 players simultaneously. It is also the event that has the greatest potential for any match to go way beyond painful in slowness. Thus, the potential savings in player-hours by using clocks in doubles is far beyond the potential in clocking any other event. Every player-hour reduced is one less potential cause of delays elsewhere. And keep in mind that while doubles may not hold up anything else since it is often lowest priority, it is only not the bottleneck because it can be played at 3 AM without anything waiting for it to end.
